The Information Worker's Value Chain
We had a meeting with a customer earlier this week and the customer told us about their daily collaboration problems: Number one problem was information overload and they found that their existing Wiki system would not help them relieving their problems: "Publishing everything earlier is no solution for us". This made me think about the daily processes in collaboration of information work and how to apply the right tools in this process.
The overall process seems very similar for different kinds of information workers, like software developers, engineers, analysts, business people, designers, ... The daily job of an information worker is to create information. In order to do this, gathering existing information is neccessary. And - in order to make the results of your work visible, publishing of information is neccessary.
Parallel to the work of gathering, creating and publishing information, information workers communicate constantly and need management. Management is first and foremost self-management, the popularity of methodologies like GTD shows that information workers have recognized the importance of self management, but there is also classical project managament.
