Usability is perceived as a weak point in many open source projects. Last week we had a workshop with Ellen Reitmayr who is involved in the usability efforts of the KDE project and incited openusability.org, a project that connects open source developers and usability engineers.
Her top-five requisites for success in open source usability are:
- A clear vision
- A defined process
- Responsible project-management
- Understanding incentives for contributors
- Open channels of communication
With Ellen's help we could re-structure our development process and prepare an infrastructure for and open development process that fosters usability.
