What DocBook lacks

Over at the Furious Purpose Weblog you can find a longer posting about some frustrations with DocBook. The main point is: There are no good editors for DocBook and conversion into other formats is hard.

In my opinion support the question which editor you choose and like is a very persoonal decision. Some people like to use graphical editors like XXE, which is very easy to configure, or Serna, which gives a nice word-processor-like view of the document, others choose code-oriented editors like jEdit, <<oxygen/>, VIM or Emacs. It is nearly impossible to find the one-size-fits-all universal XML editor.

The point of conversion is harder.

At this point, thirteen years into its lifetime, I was hoping for a plethora of tools that I could download that would offer me a number of conversion options, and a wide array of 'themes' that can be applied to get a different look to the semantics I've defined.
There are in fact the official XSL and DSSL stylesheets as well as some additional stylesheets for special purposes like Joochs or the FreeBSD DocBook CSS stylesheets. Most customizations of the original DocBook stylesheets, which could be seen as different 'themes', live in some CVS repositories and are hard to find. I think it would be a nice idea to create a repository for DocBook stylesheet customizations with preview output and installation instructions.
